| Children Play to Learn |
|
NITY SCHOOL'S basic teaching philosophy is incorporated into every curriculum module, or Learning Unit. This is to provide an educational opportunity for children to have fun experiencing and building a trusting and loving relationship with themselves and each other. We firmly believe that play is fundamental to a young child's intellectual growth - it is the very "business" of childhood. We carefully design all of our Learning Units to engage the youngster's imagination while teaching developmentally appropriate preschool concepts and skills. Social, emotional and physical learning complement mental learning and children use all their senses to explore the materials and subjects. Some of our favorite unit subjects include the Solar System, the Circus, the Farm, the Restaurant, our Community, the Zoo, the Wizard of Oz, our Self, our Senses, Family (home and friends), Holidays and Natural Environments.
Our Learning Unit on the Farm capitalizes on the small child's natural love of animals to teach our 3-year olds many fundamental preschool skills. Categorizing, classifying, comparing and contrasting eventually help lead to reading and math readiness. Role playing and telling stories about animals help the children to understand and verbalize feelings. Sharing a favorite animal toy with the class encourages cooperation. A visit to a farm or petting zoo engages all the senses. As with every Learning Unit, the children have fun as they learn to relate to the world around them.
